CHICAGO (Reuters) A Colorado meat company is expanding a recall of beef due to possible contamination by E.coli O157:H7 bacteria after an investigation found 18 illnesses may be linked to the meat, the U.S.
Agriculture Department said on Sunday.
Greeley, Colorado-based JBS-Swift Beef Co is voluntarily expanding its June 24 recall to include about 380,000 lbs of assorted beef products, USDA said.  The original recall was for 41,280 lbs.  The affected beef was produced on April 21 and was distributed nationally and internationally. 
E.coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacteria that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and, in severe cases, kidney failure. The very young, seniors, and persons with weak immune systems are at the most risk.

State producers will have an opportunity on Tuesday to speak their minds about the future of a National Animal Identification System as the U.S. Department of Agriculture has added Nebraska as one of its stops on a national listening tour gathering information on the pros and cons on NAIS.
According to Dave Wright, president of the Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska, his organization is urging ranchers and farmers from across the state to attending the Nebraska NAIS meeting.
Wright said that after five years of voluntary compliance, support for NAIS is very low.
ICON wants the USDA to see no thread of hope in the cattle country of Nebraska, he said.
Wright said if the current voluntary system becomes mandatory, the program would fail because the cost of the electronic equipment needed for the tracking system would be detrimental to the small producer, especially in recent years when profit margins have been almost nonexistent.

Here in Indiana, the legislature had to be called back into a special session because our Lame Duck Republican governor is hiding under his desk and offering no real answers on how to go about a state budget.
When Gov. Mitch Daniels does come out from under his desk, all he ever says is Under my plan, education wont be cut, and failing to mention thats because Indiana got the federal stimulus money from the Obama plan.
Meanwhile the Republicans in the legislature are fighting the Daniels Plan (if you can call it that, with their own plan which does in fact seek to slash education and Medicare and other things, and the Democrats have to fight the Republicans to stop them from doing that.
The Indiana government has effectively had a stroke of state between an ineffective governor who doubles as a compulsive liar, and the Republicans and Democrats fighting each other over the scraps.
Then if that wasnt bad enough, the Republicans  are trying to hijack the special budget session (which is already costing Indiana taxpayers millions because of the Republican lack of leadership) with another bill to Constitutionally ban same-sex marriages, because apparently the biggest Republican concern with the looming  budget crisis that they have caused, is to distract with divisive social issues and to try to illegalize human rights that they already made illegal under statute years ago.
Indiana is a joke, I mean a big joke, and the bitch of the joke is that we still have over TWO BILLION DOLLARS left over from when our governor committed treason and leased our state assets to foreign companies years ago.
