Yes that right folks, I started my ninth round of clomid on Saturday night. I don't even know how long you are supposed be prescribed it for, i.e. how many cycles are deemed too many? When we went to see our fertility specialist last November/December, she told us that it could take up to a year for us to conceive again and we would just have to be patient. My patience is already wearing thin.
The really head meltingly frustrating thing about where we are right now is that before I ever went near clomid, hcg shots, naltrexone, mucodyne, pyrodoxine, fertility plus or any of the other plethera of supplements I am taking daily, I got pregnant relatively easily.
We started ttc in April 06, started using OPKs in Sept '06, started charting BBT in Oct '06 and bingo! We hit target that month. So first our attempt took us six months.
I miscarried at the end of November, we were advised to let one cycle go by before trying again, so we started again in January '07. This time it took two months. We definately had the knack at this stage.
Unfortunately, I didn't have the knacked of holding onto these little guys, and that pregnancy turned out to be a chemical one, or a very early miscarraige, whichever you want to label it. We decided not to waste any more time and went for it again the following month. Got pregnant on the first try. We lost this little bean at nine and a half weeks.
The next time we tried was October '07, and again we acheived our mission on the first attempt. This makes us sound like disgustingly fertile people, but my definition of fertility is one that includes a viable pregnancy and live birth. So when we lost this pregnancy at five and a half weeks, we knew that it was time to seek the help of a fertility specialist.
I do think when we first visited the clinic she did talk up our chances of success. She told us that they have an 80% success rate with recurrent miscarriage patients. She explained the process, finding the problem, treating the problem and counting effective cycles, and the anticipated timelines of each phase. She said since we didn't have an issue getting pregnant in the past, that we probably wouldn't have much of a problem in that department in the future. We just had to get the treatment right. We anticipated that this wouldn't take that many months to sort out. It ended up taking a year. A very long agonising year. A year in which our friends and family moved on with their lives. John's youngest brother and his wife had their first baby in that time. A couple who hadn't gotten together when we started ttc had their first baby and conceived their second. We were still stuck in reverse when everyone else was cruising along in top gear.
And here we still are. Stuck in the slow lane, plodding along. The next step might be to get John's side of things checked out. We are due back to the clinic on April 28th so we will see how we go from there. Last August I said I would give this another year and a half, then it's time to move on.
Pass me the crazy pills and hide the kitchen knives. Honey, I'm home.

Article by Zen Habits contributor Jonathan Mead ; follow him on twitter . “Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless - like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.” - Bruce Lee Bruce Lee was a paragon of cool and an icon of the ultimate bad-ass. Not only were his martial arts skills incredible, but he had such an impressive physique that even bodybuilders in the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger admired him. Whats more impressive is that Bruce trained his body without ever stepping into a gym and with very little use of weights or machines. Here are just a few of Lees physical feats : Performed one-hand push-ups using only the thumb and index finger . Could hold an elevated v-sit position for 30 minutes or longer. Could throw grains of rice up into the air and then catch them in mid-flight using chopsticks. Could break wooden boards 6 inches (15 cm) thick. Performed 50 reps of one-arm chin-ups. While you may not get to Bruce Lees level overnight, you can start getting in shape without the use of a lot of fancy (and expensive) equipment. You can do it from the comfort of your own home, in a space as large as a bathroom. Part of the reason I started training without a gym was because I began training in Jeet Kune Do (Bruce Lees method of martial arts). But I also got tired of paying monthly gym dues. At the time, I was looking for things I could cut out of my monthly budget to save a little extra money. I thought about getting rid of my gym membership altogether, but I didnt want to sacrifice my health or physical fitness. So I found another way. For months, I havent had a gym membership, yet Im getting stronger and faster than Ive ever been in my life. You dont have to buy lots of weights or machines, either. The most expensive equipment youll need (a simple doorway pull-up bar) will cost no more than $35.00. Bruce Lee was a big proponent of holistic or total fitness. His workouts included strength, speed, endurance, and flexibility training. Heres just a few of the ways you can start getting stronger, faster and more toned without ever stepping into a gym: Calisthenics . There are so many different bodyweight exercises out there, but well start with the basics. For the lower body : lunges and squats are a good start. For upper body : pull-ups, push-ups, and shoulder press ups . For your core : crunches, chops, and reverse crunches will get you going. Whats great about bodyweight exercises is that they build functional strength. Theyre natural movements you would use in real life situations like sports, self-defense, gardening, or doing chores. Plus when you do bodyweight exercises, you force your body to use more supporting and balancing muscles than you would on machines. For more bodyweight exercises check out these great resources: The Ultimate Guide to Bodyweight Training: 100 Killer Resources and for an awesome list of bodyweight exercises with illustrations check out Combat Fitness . Bonus : Top 10 Best Bodyweight Exercises for Advanced and Beginners . Isometric exercises . These are basic bodyweight exercises, but where you hold your body in a static position. Examples of these are the frog sit, v-sit, horse stance, hanging from a pull-up bar, and the plank . Calisthenic exercises will improve muscle strength over a range of motion, but isometric exercises are great for joint and stabilizing strength. Range of motion and flexibility . The best exercise Ive found for range of motion and flexibility is yoga. The best thing about yoga is that no equipment is required and you can find tons of free resources online for yoga routines. Check out Anmol Mehtas Yoga Illustrations to get you started. Balance. Balance is the ability to keep your equilibrium when your center of gravity is thrown off-balance. There are many ways you can practice balance every day (we wont get into tight rope walking here). When youre putting on your shoes or getting dressed, do it on one foot. Walk on the curb and try to walk in a straight line without stumbling. Or if youre really ambitious, theres always pogo sticking and unicycling. Dynamic exercise . Dynamic exercise is anything where youre not performing routine after routine. Things are in flux and constantly changing. Youre moving in more natural movements, rather than continuous repetition of fixed patterns. I recently started doing Jeet Kune Do in the park every weekend. Its a great way to get a good work out and learn self defense. Not to mention, practicing martial arts tends to make you inspired to further pursue and achieve higher levels of physical fitness. If youre not into martial arts, you can always pick up a sport like tennis, handball, basketball, or take dance classes. Do whatever youre naturally drawn to. Or if you struggle with seeing fitness as an enjoyable activity, you might consider getting a Wii Fit . Theres a lot of other opportunities for exercise that dont include a gym that I havent listed here. Hiking, jogging, skiing, yardwork The list could go on. Just use your imagination. Make it fun and change it up. Thats the great thing about exercising without a gym, theres so much to choose from. On a side note, I will, however, say that for me, it took a lot more discipline to work out from home. It was easy for me to just go to the gym. Once Im there, theres not a lot else I can do other than work out. But at home, theres always distraction, always other things you can do besides working out (like laying on the couch or surfing the internet). For me, practicing martial arts inspires me to be physically fit. While you might not have this problem, I thought it only fair to be upfront about this issue. The other motivator for me to work out from home besides saving money was the variety of workouts. Theres just so many more options with bodyweight exercises than machines. You can always do something to further challenge yourself. If push-ups are a breeze, you can try doing them on your fingers or in a close grip (with a medicine ball). If pull-ups become too easy, train for a one arm pull-up (insanely difficult). Attaining Bruce Lee like fitness isnt just about doing the types workouts he did and eating the same diet. What made Bruce so great was his natural curiosity and drive to constantly explore and learn more about fitness and personal growth. (His personal library contained over 2,000 books!) Tap into your own curiosity and make fitness enjoyable. Challenge yourself to new levels of fitness. Go beyond what you think you can do. “If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.” - Bruce Lee This article was written by Zen Habits contributor Jonathan Mead of Illuminated Mind . I'm going to just jump right in and get this blog started. I could go back over the past several years and write about everything that got us to this point, but it would probably bore you (as well as me).
My husband Ricardo and I have been trying to conceive a baby for over 2 1/2 years now with no luck. As it turns out, I have PCOS (Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome) which makes having a baby that much more difficult. We started seeing an RE (Reproductive Endocrinologist) in Septbember 2008 and I was put on 50mg of Clomid daily (in addition to my Metformin that I had already been taking).
Soon after starting the Clomid, I had a Saline Infusion Sonohysterogram that reavealed I had a fibroid tumor within my uterus. I was instructed to stop TTC and surgery was scheduled for December of 2008. The fibroid was removed and I was cleared to begin trying to conceive again.
The problem?
I had to wait for good ole' Aunt Flo to arrive and she never did. I waited through the entire month of December and almost all of January before I called the doctor for a script for Provera. After taking the Provera for ten days, Auto Flo made her arrival on February 7th. I was quite excited and ready to start taking the Clomid again.
I took my clomid on CD (cycle day) 3-7 as instructed and then I waited. I had to go into the RE's office CD 11 for a follicle scan to check how the follies were growing. They were all very small still and really had not grown much. I was then instructed to come back on CD 14 for another scan to see if there was any growth. By then they were 8mm 9mm. I was then told to come in for just one more scan on CD 17 (which is today) in hopes that they were just 'slow growers'.
So this morning I go in for the scan and of course, it wasn't good news. I had two follies, 7mm 8mm. They had actually shrunk! I wasn't surprised though - I knew it wasn't going to be good. The last time I took Clomid I did ovulate (CD 18) and I knew the pills were working because my ovaries felt heavy and full... it was just an uncomfortable feeling. However, this time around I didn't feel much. Maybe some twinges here and there, but nothing at all like the first time on Clomid.
I can't figure out why the Clomid worked the first time and not the second. The ultrasound technician as well as the nurse didn't know either, but they said they would call me this afternoon after they spoke with the doctor about where to go from here. At first I was quite upset that the follies weren't growing, but I've since come to terms that this cycle is pretty much a bust and there's really nothing they can do to save it. I know there will be more cycles to come and more times to try again. I'm really making an effort to stay positive and upbeat, but some days it's hard. I know things will happen when they're supposed to and there's no way I can speed up the process. I just have to let things happen as they will and take each day in stride.
So, now I'm patiently sitting here, waiting for the RE's office to call. Once I get word from them, I'll update again.
Thanks for reading - more to come later.

The Bush administration could take advantage of falling oil prices and plummeting fuel demand to replenish millions of barrels of crude into the U.S. emergency petroleum stockpile.
The Energy Department is sitting on a hefty $584 million it raised from selling 11 million barrels of crude to refiners from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina laid waste to the countrys energy infrastructure. The department wanted to replace the sold barrels, but balked at the cost as the oil price marched relentlessly higher, hitting a record above $147 a barrel in July.
But with a weak economy, crude costs have fallen by more than half to $55 a barrel this week. That is close to the same price the Energy Department sold those 11 million barrels of oil three years ago.
If the department doesnt use the cash in its piggybank before the Bush administration comes to an end on Jan. 20 some lawmakers want the new Obama administration to use the money to promote alternative energy.
The Energy Department said it is examining and analyzing the idea of buying oil for the stockpile now that prices have fallen, but no decision has been made.

Citigroup may be too big to fail, but is it big enough to close a deal? Soon after losing its bid for Wachovia to Wells Fargo, Citi turned it sights on Chevy Chase Bank, which while not as mighty as Wachovia, was at least closer to its east coast power base. This morning, Capital One Finance said it had agreed to buy the mid-Atlantic lender, right out from under Citis nose.
JP Morgan Chase had also been interested in Chevy Chase, a smallish, unlisted lender. The deal announced by Capital One was for $520 million - hardly the kind of blockbuster that makes or breaks a battered Wall Street monolith.
It will be interesting to see if Citi, brimming over with TARP funds that the Treasury has all but begged it and others to spend on lending, stays on the prowl. Bank of America took its TARP money and boosted its stake in a Chinese lender, so there is some precedent for Citi to spend the funds on a deal.
But with Citis wallet stuffed with taxpayer cash, the impetus for growth may be less imperative. If it decides against bidding for the deposits of another regional bank, Citi will find itself with only financial assets to sell in a sellers market.
It agreed to sell its German retail business, which it put on the block over the summer with a price tag of around $8 billion, and at the end of November reports emerged it would try to sell its trust bank unit in Japan for more than $400 million.
Deals of the day:
* Goldman Sachs said it has rejected an offer from Panasonic to buy its shares in Sanyo Electric because it believes the offer price is too low.
* Rio Tinto is in talks to sell its half of a Chinese aluminium joint venture to its partner, which is consolidating its assets to prepare for a takeover by another state-owned company, sources in the two Chinese companies said.
* Japanese insurance group TD Holdings may bid for two Japanese life insurers put up for sale by American International Group, the Asahi newspaper reported.
* Nippon Oil, Japans biggest refiner, is merging with smaller Nippon Mining Holdings in a move to cut capacity and costs as a global slowdown hits demand for oil products.
* Private equity firm Apax Partners is considering an investment in Bank of Ireland as interest in Irish banks by buyout groups continues to grow, the Financial Times reported.
* Media mogul Sumner Redstone has agreed with his daughter, Shari Redstone, to sell some of National Amusements 1,500 cinemas rather than the entire division, the Financial Times said citing people familiar with the matter.
* Global Investment House, Kuwaits biggest investment bank, is in talks with several local banks to get $1 billion worth of loans, while seeking a quick sale of its stake in a Bahraini lender, it said.
* Dutch dredging group Boskalis Westminster dropped its bid to buy maritime services company Smit, saying it would be difficult to take it over without managements cooperation.
